iQRite is the component brand behind the HoloDesk Interactive DJ Mixer

iQRite interactive components are the basis of the intelligence behind the The HoloDesk interactive surface systems that set a new bench mark for international DJ concerts and live performances.

When first seen live in concert, the crowd reaction was enthusiastic as Deadmau5 introduced a new way for DJ’s to perform live on the dual imaging touch interactive surface. The following day the viral nature of social media took over as the word spread like wildfire that DJ hardware had taken a major step turning science fiction into commercial reality.

The European global debut was in the most royal of cities – London with a king of the dance floor, Deadmau5. The sellout Earls Court concert stunned the crowds when Deadmau5 took to the centre stage to perform Arguru on the 74″ inch HoloDesk interactive touch surface.

For creator, inventor and technologist behind the concept, Kevin Andreassend was convinced that the time was ripe to begin the journey of redefining and introducing large format multi touch in live concerts some years before. First seen in the Tom Cruise Minority film, Kevin and his partners at about the same time were planning on how to develop this type of system to the international market. Skip ahead a few years and in the meantime there was a ground swell around the world in finger interaction.

Our idea was that we wanted to make a huge transportable in air supported surface, so huge that it would take a van to transport an assembled unit, and so was borne the 74″ dia, 1.7m h x 2m wide HoloDesk. Some other crucial parameters was that it had to be dual imaging and no more than 6mm thick and seem like a floating image.

During the year since its debut on the global stage, it was still the biggest secret in New Zealand. Kevin explains, “we wanted to to continue to develop the HoloDesk concept, and control the time launch in our home market. The international opportunities were far greater off shore and so it was natural for us to focus in the European and USA markets.

Multi Touch Gestures Announced for iQRite Kitset Frame

22 iQRite Multi Touch Gestures

iQRite announces the 22 Gestures to revolutionise your surface

The iQRite iQ1125 Kitset frames is perfect for projection, LCD and plasma panels. Each iQrite Frame can be upgraded from Single to Dual to Multi Touch by simply upgrading the external USB Controller.

The iQRite Infrared Touch Frame is based on patented high precision infra red optical touch technology that detects touch inputs and infra red sensing.

Most existing infra red touch systems do not support high precision because the physical size of the optical sensors limits precision. There have been some recent improvements using a light interpolation technique, however it is still based on software. This kind of software manipulation can not physically improve touch accuracy and its precision can be inconsistent in determining a single touch input from consecutive or multiple inputs.

Unlike other technologies on the market, we have patented our very own infra red technology which offers near pixel level accuracy and extremely fast response times. In addition if offers touch object size recognition, meaning our touch frames can identify whether the touch object is a finger, thumb or a pen. Without the need for a dedicated stylus. Virtually any object can be used as a mouse to perform clicking, smooth dragging and drawing since this technology does not require any ITO coatings. Our touch panels can offer superior clarity and durability at a competitive price. Our touch panel systems can withstand high temperature and humidity. In addition they can be manufactured to be water and dust proof (IP65) to operate in any temperature.

The iQRite Touch Panel is a solid state design. Because it does not deploy any touch overlay or ITO films like capacitance and resistive touch panels, it can work with or without the glass overlay. This unique feature allows for superior clarity, no drift and a simple one time calibration. The aluminium bezel construction makes it very durable and dependable protecting against damage caused by moisture, heat and even vandalism. It has the smallest dimension currently offered for an IR frame in the industry.

The latest iQRite Touch frame model is the iQ1125 series, are easy to assemble and are shipped in compact packages without the glass overlay. This way the end user will save on shipping costs and are able to buy the glass overlay locally without hassle.

If requested a tempered glass overlay can be supplied with your iQRite frame, with optional anti-glare and anti reflection coatings available.

iQRite and HoloDesk bring a new level of excitement to the dance floor

HoloDesk is the latest generation of interactive technology that is hitting dance parties and clubs world-wide. The HoloDesk systems are currently available in two interactive options. Edgeless and Framed. Internationally renowed DJ, Deadmau5 went for the Edgeless solution where it appears a clear dual imaging surface is suspended in mid air. His final concert for 2010, packed the Earl Court (London) venue to capacity in one of his most amazing hi-tech shows last Saturday.

The screens (2) built for the concert is the world’s largest commercially available interactive virtual DJ desk. It is one of 5 shipping sizes that have been designed with one thing in mind, to bring the high tech touch and visual world to the DJ market on a scale never seen before.

The HoloDesk is a virtual imaging touch dual imaging touch screen and is manufactured in a variety of sizes and options.

We knew we had a tiger by the tail from comments we started to receive from those in the know, who knew what we were developing. It was not long before the comments turned into inquiries from around the world from DJs wanting to know how they could get their hands on a HoloDesk.

The HoloDesk versions shipping today is only the start of the exciting development path we have for the HoloDesk as we bring a range of features and continued innovation to the surface.

Footnote: Please note this product is not known or sold as Emulator and bears no association with that name. HoloDesk is owned by interactive manufacturer ICE AV Technology Ltd and who has been active in the digital communication space since 2003. The HoloDesk design is the copyright IP of ICE AV technology who manufacture these systems in New Zealand for world wide distribution. Through its other divisions it distributes and consults world wide to companies in the digital arena. We are the only company that takes a sheet of glass, length of steel and a bunch of electronics to create an interactive DJ surface completely from raw materials.

Life after touch interaction with John Underkoffler

John Underkoffler demonstrates the future of frameless based interaction in this TED presentation. Does this mean the iQRite interactive touch frames are already redundant?

Well here at iQRite we believe that there is a long and profitable need for touch based interaction for many years to come. However our industry will evolve and change and exciting new technology will come onto the market in due course.

In talking to a significant DOOH company today reminds me just how far ahead some of us are ahead on the road map and that technology itself may often not be the problem, but local bylaws and customer acceptance may be major road blocks. In New Zealand for example you could count on one hand if not a couple of fingers the number of LED billboard screens in public area other than in stadiums.

Global Education Partnership

This is a forward announcement calling for expressions of interest. We are at the initial stages of formulating a global partnership programme for education and researchers that will package Elements multi-touch software and a 10 point iQRite multi-touch Frame for teaching, learning and development.

Our intention is to make it a simple no fuss and affordable way to enable interactive courses, media departments etc to easily integrate Multi touch into their study programme.

The iQRite MIT Education Programme is only available for registered and recognised tertiary colleges and schools etc. Open to all countries and level of study.

Some of the benefits will include:
– Access to very special hardware pricing.
– Ability to use the very latest MT technology (we went into production last week).
– Opportunity to show case student work.
– Unique software licensing arrangements.
– Common and open community of encouragement, recognition and innovation.
– Ability for graduating students to publish their profile and show case their work.
– Be an active member of the multi-touch industry.
– Opportunity to partner with iQRite resellers in your region.
– Achieve recognition in expos for the work coming out of your programme.
– Ability for students to create an income stream for work they produce during and post your course.
– Connecting students and programmes around the world using a common hardware platform.
– Sharing of experiences and resources suitable for the iQRite frame.
– A well known platform for creating local and global competitions

The components of the initiative include an actual IQrite Multi-touch Frame and Elements Software. The iQRite Multi-touch frame can be applied to an off the shelf LCD or if you wished you could build your own touch table cabinet (using projection or LCD) and simply fit the frame to the top.

Schools will need to be running the Microsoft Windows platform to be able to participate in this initiative.

We envisage that programmes and departments offering IT courses, human interaction, design courses, media courses, rehabilitation, therapy, and the like will be ideal partners in the programme.

There will be a screening and approval process, however this will not be arduous process and will be implemented online.

We would welcome any suggestions from educators, administrators and expressions of interested participants in the iQRite MT Education Programme. Send email to sales@iqrite.com Make sure you add all you contact details and some links that help us understand who you are, what education programmes you are offering or want to move into.

Build a Multi Touch Pad with your pocket money

Seth Sandler has put this easy to understand video together which demonstrates how with a few simple tools and materials it is possible to create a multi touch project that will engage any one with a slight bent towards the scientific and some engineering ability (cellotape up a box and make a hole!)

With some ingenuity this multi touch project, would make an excellent school project to introduce students to the world of software, engineering and computer set up. By using low cost materials you might have or easy to come by, the web cam is probably the only item you might need to purchase.

This uses Front Diffused Illumination, with normal ambient light (infrared not required or needed) and a normal off-the-shelf webcam (IR filter can still be in place).

See how the students become engaged in this public showing at UCSD Music Center using Audio Touch. Note that in this case a projector has been added.
